Location: Gilead City, Hanar
Type: Government Residence
The Residence is the official seat of power for Tishla, First Citizen of Hanar. Originally an ornate human home appropriated by Gelt occupiers, it carries both symbolic and functional significance. The house once belonged to a Legal Caste advocate implicated in the death of Kai-ban, Tishla’s infant son. Tishla later avenges him by killing the advocate in his cell, sealing her claim to leadership with both political and personal resolve.
Structure and Style:
- Architecture: The building is long and two stories high, retaining its original Terran design. Tishla refuses to replace it with something more regal, insisting on modesty and functionality.
- Foyer as Audience Chamber: The large entrance hall doubles as her public audience space, where she holds councils and receives petitioners. This choice reinforces her message of accessible leadership.
- Unpaved Square: Tishla intentionally leaves the square in front of the Residence unpaved, as a symbolic gesture to remain grounded—literally and politically. A tavern continues to operate across the square without interference, highlighting her tolerance for civic life beyond government control.
Private Quarters:
- The upper floor houses Tishla’s private apartment, which includes a small kitchen and a comfortably furnished bedroom. Despite her high status, Tishla maintains a personal simplicity that resonates with her followers.
- In an emotionally charged scene, she “lowers herself” to act as JT Austin’s servant, later making love to him in an expression of vulnerability and trust. The moment is a significant turning point in both of their arcs.
Surrounding Features:
- Garden: One side of the Residence hosts a lush garden, offering space for reflection and informal meetings.
- Athletic Field / Stadium: The other side was developed into an athletic field, later upgraded to a small stadium used for training and public events. Suicide has JT do combat training there, including sword work, under Mitsuko Yamato‘s tutelage.
