The runabout is a common, versatile ground vehicle used extensively on Amargosa, especially in rural and agricultural districts. Comparable to a light utility truck or jeep on Earth, runabouts are compact, rugged, and capable of navigating Amargosa’s varied terrain, from well-worn settlement roads to rough farm tracks and open fields.
Runabouts are typically powered by solar panels or, occasionally, combustibles, though they can be adapted for multiple energy sources. Their design prioritizes durability over speed, with reinforced frames and modular cargo beds allowing for hauling equipment, supplies, or passengers.
On farms like the Parkers’, runabouts are indispensable for daily chores — transporting feed, tools, and people across sprawling agricultural plots. During the invasion of Amargosa, runabouts become vital escape and utility vehicles, as their rugged build and independence from fixed infrastructure give survivors a means of fleeing overland or transporting emergency supplies.
However, their civilian design leaves them vulnerable in combat situations. While adaptable, they lack armor and onboard weapons, making them an easy target for Gelt battle wagons and aerial attacks.
Notes:
- Primary civilian ground vehicle on Amargosa.
- Commonly used in farming, township logistics, and light transport.
- Powered by fusion cells or hybrid fuel systems.
- Modular design allows cargo hauling or passenger transport.
- Vital for evacuation and survival during the invasion.
- Lacks armor or weaponry; vulnerable to enemy attacks.
- Quan, the Parkers’ farm manager, uses a runabout to evacuate JT and Lizzy early in the invasion.
Author’s Notes:
Runabouts were loosely based on the Willys Overland Jeep and post-WWII versions of the Land Rover and Toyota Highlander, as well as Volkswagen Kurierwagen.
JT Austin and Ellie Nardino each commandeer one after the Liberation for personal use.
The sapient lycanth Spikey also obtains a runabout for his use.
