Nobu Katsumato was a human settler on Hanar, one of the few survivors of the original Gilead colony after the Gelt invasion and the detonation of a clean fusion device that destroyed its main city. Scarred by the loss and occupation, Katsumato became a bitter and unpredictable figure within the early human resistance.
In one of his final acts, Nobu carried out a sneak attack on a training session where JT Austin was preparing new settlers to defend themselves. He threw a grenade into the session, killing JT’s human partner and maiming the Gelt officer assigned to assist. JT and his trainees pursued him; JT ultimately found him and delivered a brutal beating before Mitsuko Yamato intervened and stopped him.
Later, while being held in Gilead City‘s makeshift jail, Nobu further disgraced himself by grabbing a Gelt serving girl as she brought him food. His behavior earned him a stun rod to the chest from the colony’s prefect, and a sharp verbal condemnation from Tishla, who had come to release JT. The incident further alienated Nobu from both the human and Gelt factions trying to rebuild the colony.
Katsumato’s legacy is one of rage and isolation—a cautionary example of how trauma, when left to fester, can turn resistance into recklessness and justice into personal vengeance.
