Lady Starship Trooper

Appears in After Amargosa:

Following the Liberation of Amargosa, Davra Andraste joins the Compact Navy and departs her homeworld aboard the Challenger alongside fellow recruit Connor Duffy. Though still grappling with the trauma of war and leaving behind the life she fought to rebuild, Davra sets her sights on becoming a naval officer.

Transferred to the aging transport Alyssa Carson for the journey to the Helios system, Davra struggles to adjust among a cliquish group of privileged Metisian recruits led by a girl named Diana. Despite the tension, a true test of character comes when the Carson suffers a catastrophic reactor failure. With a meltdown imminent and no time to evacuate, Davra volunteers for a near-suicidal mission to manually jettison the fission reactor. Drawing on her survival instincts, engineering background, and the regenerative effects of her Thulian rejuvenation treatment, she succeeds—saving the ship at great personal cost.

Rescued by the civilian freighter Fukushima Maru, Davra spends ten days unconscious, her body slowly repairing the radiation damage. When she recovers, she learns that Cassandra, one of the former “mean girls,” had defied her clique to stay by Davra’s side, choosing duty over privilege. Davra is reassigned to a new Officer Training School class, more confident than ever in her ability to lead and survive — not just as a former resistance fighter, but as a future officer in the Compact Navy.
