Hiro Shirioda is a Compact Navy brat and roommate of Connor Duffy during their time at MIT. A sophomore and underclassman, Hiro is technically a civilian while completing his degree but expects to attend Officer Training College (OTC) after graduation. Though inexperienced compared to Duffy, he proves loyal, resourceful, and willing to bend the rules under pressure. Hiro reluctantly aids Duffy during the Boston Cubist incident, helping procure Gelt stun grenades and deploying engineering spiders to neutralize terrorists beneath the city. As a result, he is placed on unofficial “double secret probation” but faces no formal charges due to Duffy taking responsibility.
While not stated directly, Hiro is the son of Captain TJ Durant, a respected Navy officer who occasionally appears or is referenced in Compact military circles. Captain Durant, known for disdaining nepotism, insists his son earn his commission through merit rather than family connections.
