Gilead City

Planet: Hanar (formerly Gilead)
Type: Urban Center / Capital

Summary:
Gilead City is the capital of Hanar, a reimagined and jointly inhabited settlement built on the ashes of the former human colony Gilead. Destroyed by a clean fusion device during the Gelt Incursion of 429 IE, the original Gilead City was left in ruins. In the aftermath, Gelt settlers constructed a colony on the site, incorporating some of the surviving human structures into their own designs.

Later, under the leadership of Tishla, the city was transformed into a joint human-Gelt capital, symbolizing reconciliation and coexistence. The new Gilead City was built atop the original Gelt settlement, which itself rested partially on the ruins of the original human colony. Portions of the pre-invasion city still stand as memorials, while others have been integrated into the expanding skyline.

Key Features:

  • Layered History:
The city contains visible strata of history: the destroyed human colony, the interim Gelt occupation settlement, and the new Hanarian capital rising above both. Tours and markers acknowledge each layer, and some ruins remain undisturbed as sites of remembrance.
  • Architectural Fusion:
Human and Gelt construction styles now coexist. Some buildings feature adaptive design—retrofitting Gelt structures with human interfaces and vice versa. Nano-culture construction has allowed rapid expansion of residential, medical, and military facilities.
  • Reconciliation Symbol:
Gilead City represents a unique interspecies government, drawing colonists from Compact, Realm, and neutral origins. Tishla’s bold leadership and offer to share the city with surviving humans turned a site of tragedy into one of the most politically significant cities in the Compact Universe.

Notable Events:

  • Foundation by Tishla:
After claiming her late husband Kai’s authority, Tishla forced the Laral family to vacate and invited both humans and Gelt to jointly rebuild. Her offer to be executed if rejected gave her proposal weight and cemented her as a legitimate leader.
  • Nobu Incident:
A radical human settler named Nobu Katsumoto disrupted the peace when he attacked a mixed-species training session. He was captured by Mitsuko Yamato and JT Austin after a tense pursuit. The incident underscored ongoing tensions but also the city’s commitment to law and order.
  • Dungeon Detention Center:
The city’s underground jail—nicknamed “the Dungeon”—has housed high-profile prisoners such as Nobu and, temporarily, JT Austin himself. It remains a secure facility beneath the bustling capital.
