Devold is a young Gelt male, part of the settler family that occupied the Parker farm during the Gelt occupation of Amargosa. His family—father Clev and mother Quma—arrived as part of the initial wave of Gelt settlers, though like many others, they were transported convicts rather than volunteers. After the Liberation, the family chose to stay on Amargosa, helping to rebuild the farm alongside human survivors like JT Austin, Eric Yuwono, and Colonel Quan.
Physically, Devold is the Gelt equivalent of a human early adolescent, though he is only about eleven years old. He initially struggles with human technology and customs but shows a genuine willingness to learn, helping Eric repair farm equipment and manage reconstruction efforts. His earnest nature and eagerness to prove himself slowly earn Eric’s reluctant respect.
Devold’s name carries historical significance among the Gelt. He is named for Sovereign Devold, the last Sovereign of the Realm to rule on the original Gelt homeworld and the last to rule under his birth name. Later Sovereigns would adopt ceremonial names upon ascension, a tradition initiated after the Realm began to shift its seat of power to newly colonized worlds.
During the rebuilding efforts on Amargosa, Devold is seriously wounded while saving Eric from a wild lycanth attack—an act that forges a bond between them. After his recovery, he continues working to help his family build a new life in the southern New Townships. Though Eric remains cautious, he recognizes that settlers like Devold and his family were also victims of the Realm’s manipulations and oppression.
Devold represents the hope of a younger generation of Gelt and humans learning to coexist in the aftermath of war.
