The Amundsen Mountains are a prominent mountain range located on the northern continent of Amargosa. They run in a northeast-to-southwest direction and gradually taper off as they approach the planet’s eastern coast. The range lies to the north of the Townships, marking the northern boundary of the human-settled agricultural region.
The foothills of the Amundsens serve as a key location during the events of The Children of Amargosa, particularly in the early stages of the Gelt invasion. A mysterious craft crashes into these hills prior to the attack on the hypergate, and the area becomes the focus of early resistance efforts.
The terrain is rugged and isolated, offering natural concealment and making it ideal for guerrilla operations. The Amundsen Mountains are also home to legends surrounding a ghostly figure—later revealed to be Ellie Nardino—who becomes known as the “Ghost of the Amundsens.” Her presence in the region, along with sightings of lycanth-like allies, contributes to the mythic aura of the mountains.
The range is distinct from the Misty Mountains, which bisect the continent further south. While the Misty Mountains form a cultural and logistical divide between the Townships and Lansdorp, the Amundsen range serves more as a backdrop to early engagements in the war and the formation of local legends.
